Andrea Cerdan wins 2016 State Singles Title
Congratulations to Andrea Cerdan on winning the 2016 New Jersey Girls State Singles Title. Andrea defeated defending champion, our Stephanie Schrage, in the final. This was the first loss for Schrage in any high school match in two years.
Third-seeded Andrea Cerdan became the first Paramus Catholic player to win the singles tournament when she earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Millburn's Stephanie Schrage Monday at Mercer County Park.
It was the first loss for Schrage, the tournament's top seed, in any high school match in two years, since she fell in the state singles final to Kate Fahey of Rumson-Fair Haven in 2014. Schrage has not lost a team match with Millburn in her four years. Schrage, who won over 100 career matches, reached three consecutive NJ state finals.
Cerdan started the match with a strong lead, going up 3-0 with two breaks. Schrage responded with a break of her own before holding to bring the set to 3-2. The two held serve from that point, as Cerdan led, 5-3. The next game turned out to be pivotal as the sophomore won five straight points to break and win the set, 6-3.
In the second set, the two traded breaks early, as Cerdan went ahead, 2-0, before Schrage broke to get back on serve at 2-1. Cerdan broke again and held to go ahead, 4-1, which gave some separation as she geared toward the finish line.
